Abstract

Aims: The study was aimed to establish a novel radiographic index for quantitative assessment of radiographic liver length and height of caudal vena cava (RLL/HCVC). ratio in dogs.

Methodology: A total of 123 clinically healthy dogs above one year of age were included after ensuring optimum health. Dogs were categorized according to age, body weight, sex, status of neutering and breeds. Thoraco-abdominal radiographs were taken in right lateral and ventro-dorsal views and RLL and HCVC were measured followed by calculation of the ratio.

Results: Overall ratio was recorded as 1.360.02. Ratio was 1.309 0.025, 1.3700.048 and 1.3810.039 in barrel chested, deep chested dogs and round chested breeds, respectively. Significant variations were recorded among body weight groups and breeds, while age, sex and neutering status showed non-significant alterations. Highest ratio was recorded in dogs aged 9-12 years and in 30-40 kg group. Breed wise, Saint Bernard showed highest value and chow- chow the lowest.

Conclusion: RLL/HCVC was concluded as a useful quantitative radiographic index for canine liver morphometry.
